Week 9. October 24-28.

“In the child is much knowledge, much wisdom. If we do not profit from it, it is only because of neglect on our part to become humble and to see the wonder of this soul and learn what the child can teach.” —Maria Montessori, The Theosophia

Monday, October 24

We were happy to welcome Ms. Jenny back today for dance and movement class.  We started with our warm ups of Open Shut Them and Row Your Boat.

Ms. Jenny led the class in the song Let's Go Walking in the Fall (sung to the tune of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star):

Let's go walking in the fall,

Through the corn stalks grown so tall,

Pick a pumpkin from the ground,

Gather apples by the pound,

Rake the leaves up in a pile,

Jump up sit down laugh and smile!

Next came the hand motion poem of Whisky Frisky:

Ms. Jenny then led the class in the Feet Mice story, in which the mice went to the beach and down to the bottom of the ocean, meeting all sorts of sea creatures along the way.

At the end of class, the children learned Oh! Belinda, and danced in a circle.

They thanked Ms. Jenny with a big hug.

After dance and movement class, we headed outside for a misty recess.  We had a busy afternoon work period, and several children chose to work on continent maps and booklets.  They used the continent globe and control map as guides for coloring in the continents.

Tuesday, October 25

After a misty early morning recess, we started our day with a birthday celebration.  Our friend made five trips around the sun, and she and her parents shared memories of each year of her life.  Happy birthday!

During our morning work cycle, some children chose to work on a puzzle maps:

Others returned to the continent booklets they had been working on yesterday.

Morning work period concluded with music class.  After warm ups, the children practiced listening for high and low notes, raising their hands or lowering them to show the change in pitch.

In honor of Wednesday's International Day at GVS, Ms. Ida showed the class a nyckelharpa.  This magnificent instrument, from Sweden, is comprised of strings and buttons, and played with a bow like a violin.  Here is Ms. Ida playing a Swedish tune called "The Rolling Old Man."

Ms. Ida taught the children another Swedish folk song called "Lila Sniga," or "Little Snail."  Here are the words in Swedish and English:

Lilla snigel, akta dej,
akta dej, akta dej,
Lilla snigel, akta dej,
Annars tar jag dej.

Lilla snigel kom till mig,
Kom till mig, kom till mig!
Lilla snigel kom till mig,
Jag vill krama dig!

Little snail, beware,
Beware, beware.
Little snail, beware,
Otherwise, I'll take you.

Little Snail, come to me,
Come to me, come to me!
Little Snail, come to me,
I want to hug you!

After music class, we headed outside for another misty recess.

In the afternoon, some children chose to practice static addition with the golden bead material.

There was still some time to work in the classroom,

and to sit and talk about dinosaurs.

At mid-morning circle, one friend shared a metal horse from Greece, a doll from Mexico, and a doll from the Czech Republic.  Ms. Sarah did a short puppet show with the Czech doll, in which she spoke a few simple Czech phrases.  The children thought this was very funny.
