Week 12. November 13-17

“Children are endowed with a power that enables them to reconstruct things which are very complex, and they do so with a great deal of pleasure.”
Maria Montessori, The 1946 London Lectures

Monday, November 14

This morning at Circle Time, we examined a work about the seasons.  The children are excited by the idea that winter is just a few weeks away.

Here are some seasonal books we have read in the last few days:

New work in the food prep area drew a crowd.  Thanks very much to the families who donated apples, cucumbers, and bananas.

Soon it was time for Dance and Movement with Ms. Jenny.  After warm ups, the children helped Ms. Jenny tell a movement story about Rumble Bumble Bear, who went through the forest and met all sorts of animals while collecting berries and preparing to hibernate.

Next, Ms. Jenny introduced a new song, "The North Wind Doth Blow," an old Mother Goose nursery rhyme.  Here are the words:

from Denslow's Mother Goose (1901)

The North Wind Doth Blow

1. The north wind doth blow,
And we shall have snow,
And what will poor robin do then?
Poor thing.

He'll sit in a barn,
And keep himself warm,
And hide his head under his wing,
Poor thing.

2. The North wind doth blow,
And we shall have snow,
And what will the doormouse do then?
Poor thing.

She'll curl in a ball,
In her nest oh-so small,
And wait for the coming of spring,
Poor thing.

3. The north wind doth blow,
And we shall have snow,
And what will the daisies do then?
Poor things.

They'll stay in the grass,
'Til winter has passed,
And wait for the coming of spring,
Poor things.

4. The north wind doth blow,
And we shall have snow,
And what will the swallows do then?
Poor things.

Oh say, don't you know?
They were gone long ago,
To a country much warmer than this,
Poor things.

To end the class, the children enjoyed another performance of "Strolling Through the Park One Day" and "Oh, Belinda!"

Monday afternoon passed quickly as the children worked with a variety of materials. Here are some shots of the busy work period:

Tuesday, November 15

Tuesday was a busy day.  Food prep work continued to be a popular choice this morning:

After our morning work periods, we had music class with Ms. Ida.  The class practiced identifying largo and presto segments of some classical pieces, as well as in the Macaroni the Pony song.

Ms. Ida taught a new movement song, and the children danced and sang along:

We finished our class with a practice round of Lila Sniga, which we performed at our November Community Meeting in the barn, accompanied by Ms. Ida on the nyckelharpa.

In the afternoon, several children chose to participate in a lesson on parts of a turkey.  They followed up this work by coloring accompanying booklets.

Here are some more pictures of Tuesday afternoon:

Ms. Sarah read a story at the end of the day, and we headed out to the playground:

Wednesday, November 16

The first snowy weather of the season meant a delayed opening.  After calendar and snack, we worked in the classroom until lunchtime.  We received a wonderful donation of flowers for our flower cutting work.  Soon the classroom was adorned with little vases of color. Thank you!

Today at Calendar, one friend shared a book she had brought from home.  After snack, the children got right to work.  Below are some snapshots of our morning and afternoon work periods.

At the end of the day, we had three more friends share objects from nature.  One friend shared a bird's nest, and two other friends shared rocks they had found.
