Reading has been popular this week.   We have restarted the afternoon storytime and switched gears to read some Asian stories highlighting China, our focus country.  The children have also shown a great interest in building words from their sound associations and some have made leaps into short stories.  Works are changing over from the winter theme to Easter and Spring.  And winter reports have finally landed in the mailboxes.

Monday- We started the day at morning circle celebrating P****'s birthday walk.  Happy 4 year and 7 months P!   We had an exciting day discovering the new works on the shelf.  Today's highlighted is the Chinese fan, which the children can admire and be inspired by the watercolors on it while excising their wrist and forearm muscles.  Finished the Magic Tree house #14, Day of the Dragon King.

Tuesday- Morning Circle began with the egg dying lesson.  In the afternoon we read Daisy Comes Home, by Jan Brett, which bridges our parts of a bird work with our geography work and has some beautiful illustrations of the mountain landscapes in northwest China (Zhangjiajie district).  Egg dying work is popular as was the Golden Bead subtraction lessons.  Flag work, free drawing, handwriting and stamp game were also popular choices.

Wednesday-  At Morning Circle reviewed kindness, respect and classroom rules.  Mr. Wolfe reviewed the songs for Arts Night.  In the afternoon we read The Magic Purse, retold by Yoshiko Uchida, which is a beautiful book about kindness although its set in Japan, rather than China.  No egg work due to Ms. Becky forgetting the dozen eggs at home!  Opps!  More golden bead subtraction, art project, and energy cards were popular today.

Thursday- We read The Magic Cricket, by Stefan Czernecki, which is a Chinese folklore about the creation of the Forbidden City gates.  Golden bead addition, bank game, map tracing, reading bob books, life cycle of a bean, multiplication by grouping, letter writing, and art projects.  Also the children are really into the egg dying work, and the follow up cracking an egg and eating it at lunch work.  Also thank you to C***'s family for providing us with a dozen hard boiled eggs.

Friday-  We began the day with Ms. Melissa's Art lesson on Abstract oil pastels drawings.  We read The Noisy Paint Box, by Barb Rosenstock.  It is nice to expose the child to a medium that might not otherwise be available to them, and give them a lesson on cleaning it up as well.   Other popular works include egg dying, letter writing, metal insets (the children realized that the oval could be used for making eggs designs), rabbit push pins, and flower family card set.
