Dear Parents,

This week was filled with snow and excitement.  We have a leprechaun hiding his pot of gold coins in our classroom and he needs help counting how many coins he has, so if your children have stories of counting coins, this is probably to what they are referring.  We have continued the flag project, after finishing identifying the first 30 countries.  We have the Georgia O'Keeffe art projects work, and then a new art lesson on Thursday (Henri Mattisse) this week.

Monday- Today at morning circle we reviewed the date and calendar.  During work cycle we had several big lessons of golden bead addition and word problems.  Small groups of 4 children worked together to build a word problem out of beads and solve a problem.  Some children also noticed that there was a strange pot of gold with some paper next to it.  I explained that I met a Leprechaun who had trouble counting his coins.  He had asked us to keep them safe and help him count his treasure everyday.  Some children, of course, wrote notes and counted the coins for the leprechaun.  Other popular works include the O'Keffee drawing work (especially drawing the sweet smelling lilies) and parts of a bird.

Tuesday- Another Nor'easter blew in!  Yay for 33" of snow!

Wednesday-  We had a delayed start, which meant that we greeted our friends to an open work cycle whenever they arrived.  We tried having a optional snack time, which some kids came to school and immediately had snack, while other waited a bit and ended up snacking just before lunch.  I liked giving the children the freedom to eat when they got hungry, but we ended up allowing morning snack well into the afternoon to those that didn't want to eat lunch.  We also had Mr. Wolfe come and sing to the class today.  We were able to practice our three songs for Arts Night.  After recess and lunch, we held afternoon circle reviewing the date and calendar.   We also read a chapter of the Magic Tree House.

Thursday- At morning circle, we started with the date and time (two days worth!).  Ms. Melissa gave a special lesson on Henri Mattisse. We learned that he loved art so much that even when he became blind, made art through cutting textures paper.  This artist inspired us to have a new cutting art project, which became a very popular work today.  Other popular works included, the leprechaun counting coins work, flag work, map making, and peg punch rabbits.

Friday- At morning circle, we reviewed the date and time.  We jumped into morning work cycle and several children had lesson in golden bead addition.  By using the golden beads the children can lay out a large math problem such as a 4 digit addition and concretely add the piles of beads together to solve the problem.  It gives some of the children who are working on A+ books a chance to add bigger numbers, which is highly desired as well as allow some students not yet ready for stamp game books (namely the handwriting skills, order and focus) but they are capable of building or joining larger concrete quantities.   This also allows some of the 4 years olds to work together with 5 or 6 year olds on these larger problems, which develops a nice bond.  In addition (ha, see what I did there!), Sra. Rosa came to teach us make up Spanish class due to the snowstorm we had on Tuesday.  We reviewed farm, animals, fruits and veggies, parts of the body, seasons and weather.

Keep a look out for Progress reports as well as Spring conferences.
Thanks again!
