Dear Parents,

I hope everyone had a lovely Mother's Day and enjoyed their mugs!  The kids worked so hard on them!  This week we are preparing ourselves for Community Meeting.  We're singing The Ants' go Marching so we are leading up with an Art Project that is an Ant Hat and starting a unit on insects (Honey bee, Ants and Butterflies in particular).  This week we focused on bees and wasps, due to all the buzzing around the playground that we hear.  Hopefully they'll be able to identify the difference between a bee and wasp soon, and know how to behave around one.

Monday-  We started the day with the date and calendar and then did a quick reading about the things that you can find in our backyard.  We read Look Closer, by Brian and Rebecca Wildsmith.  We had a first lesson on the Life Cycle of a Bee, and a new matching set was placed on the shelf.  Also at the peace table there is a finger labyrinth to offer some mindful movement.  Popular works today include Stamp Game Subtraction, Bead Group Multiplication, Sand and Water pouring works, Growing a Pea Plant, Land forms, Map making, and Bob Books.  At the end of the day we read Cactus Hotel, by Brenda Guiberson, which is about the life cycle of the saguaro cactus and the animals that live around it in the desert.

Tuesday- At morning circle we reviewed date and calendar and continued our discussion of insects in particular bees and wasps.  We talked about their parts, their homes, and how they fly.  We started reading  Bees and Wasps, by James Maclaine and dismissed by Bee Facts.  Popular works included Stamp Game Addition and Subtraction, Life cycle of a Bee, Painting with Tones, Cleaning a wet spill, Coffee Bean Crush, Pink Tower, Ant Hats, Parts of a Flower and Parts of Animals.  At the end of the day we read Planting a Rainbow, by Lois Ehlert, and dismissed by colors of flowers in the rainbow.

Wednesday-  At morning circle we talked about the date and calendar, and then discussed the Muslim holiday of Ramadan, or the ninth month of the Islamic calendar.  We read Golden Domes and Silver Lanterns, A Muslim Book of Colors, by Hena Khan.  Popular works included Tree matching cards and books, Trees around the World, Stamp Game Addition, Making Ants Hats,  Land Form book,  Bead Ladder, Sand Pouring, Free Draw, Spelling and Handwriting books.  At the end of the day we read Deep in the Sahara, by Kelly Cunnane & Hoda Hadadi, which explains different forms of clothing wore by Muslim people in the Islamic Sahara Regions.

Thursday-  Today is the 160th day of school!  We reviewed the date and calendar.  Popular works today included Stamp Game Addition, Spindle box, Painting with Tones, Sand Pouring work, Sound Box, Movable Alphabet, and Spindle Box.  After lunch we tried a silent reading period which turned out pretty successful.  Many children wanted to continue silently reading after the work bell rang and choose that as their afternoon work while others returned to some challenging tasks.  At the end of the day we read Where do Insects Live?, by Susan Canizares and Mary Reid.

Friday-  Today we reviewed the date and calendar.  We had a quick lesson on the Parts of a Ant and talked again about community meeting.  Popular works today included chopsticks, pouring works, map making, stamp game, and Ant Hats.  At the end of the day we read In the Trees, Honey Bees, by Lori Mortensen.

Thanks for a terrific week!  See everyone on Monday!
