Week 18. January 2-6.

“It is interesting to notice that where life is simple and natural and where the children participate in the adult’s life, they are calm and happy. "  --  Maria Montessori, The 1946 London Lectures.

It was wonderful to see everyone again after the holiday break.  At Calendar, several children informed Ms. Sarah that it is now 2023, and they enjoyed watching her erase the 2 and replace it with a 3 on our year tag.  We sang "These are the Months of the Year," counted out the 12 month tags, and identified the January tag among them. By the end of Calendar Time, children were fairly bursting to tell us all about their holiday week experiences, so we passed the talking stone and gave everyone a turn to share.

Moon and Stars

Or, Stars and Waves

Several new works were available on the fine motor shelves today, so the Practical Life Area was busy throughout the morning and afternoon.

Ms. Jenny came for dance and movement class, accompanied by another puppet character named Ms. Winter.  The children had a ball pantomiming a a snow adventure, complete with sledding.

We enjoyed recess in the mild weather before heading in to lunch, followed by a peaceful work period in the afternoon.  Happy New Year to all.

Tuesday, January 3

The children enjoyed a brisk morning recess before heading in to the morning work period.  Below are some snapshots of our busy day, which included indoor recess and music class with Ms. Ida.

Wednesday, January 4

This morning we enjoyed some outside time in the wintry mist, and welcomed a new friend to our class.  At calendar, Ms. Sarah introduced a new song, "Catch a Falling Star," by by Paul Vance and Lee Pockriss.  The morning and afternoon passed pleasantly as children worked busily with the new and familiar winter works.  At midday circle, Ms. Sarah read Sadie and the Snowman, by Allen Morgan.  At afternoon circle, two friends shared their subtraction work, and everyone sang and danced to "Catch a Falling" star before heading out to recess.  Below are some snapshots of our day.

Thursday, January 5

We started our rainy day with indoor recess.  At calendar time, one friend shared her work on the 100 Board, and addressed three questions from the audience.  The children enjoyed singing and dancing to "Catch a Falling Star" several times today, and could be heard singing it in the coatroom as they put on their outside things at the end of the day.  Below are some snapshots of our morning and afternoon.  As you can see, blocks were extremely popular today.

Friday, January 6

Today we enjoyed three snowy recesses!  At calendar time, one friend shared a rock and a storyboard, while another shared a favorite book.  The morning and afternoon passed busily, as children worked and sang "Catch a Falling Star."  In the afternoon, Ms. Sarah read The Mitten by Alvin Tresselt.
